Latvian wives are hoisted over their partner's shoulders for a gruelling race up a steep hill. 55 couples participate in the fairly new tradition with men carrying their wives up a hill 125 metres in height. The female contestant does not necessarily have to be the wife of a male; couples with 18 years of family life as well as partners with 2 years experience of living together were participating in the contest. The only condition - a female team-mate must weigh at least 50 kg. The eventual winners made the distance in 35.28 seconds and were awarded a trip to Stockholm. (August 3, 2009)
