(by Roland Hancock/Telegraph) Sheffield [UK] University PhD students Alex Baker and Chris Rose launched a video camera into space for less than the price of a second hand car. They recorded images of a curved earth's surface from the very edges of space using only a helium filled weather balloon attached to a parachute and a GPS tracking device. They also showed advice on how to construct their contraption, which burst at an estimated height of 37km before falling to earth 100 miles from its launch point. (January 27, 2011)
